On Wednesday, US President Donald Trump said that Democratic Muslim congresswomen Ilhan Omar of Minnesota and Rashida Tlaib of Michigan should be "put in a mental institution" and returned to their "original countries," the day after they had a heated debate with him during his State of the Union address.
Tlaib, an American of Palestinian descent, and Omar, an American of Somali descent, criticized Trump during the speech on Tuesday, when he praised his administration's tough campaign against immigration and its measures to enforce immigration laws. Omar and Tlaib both shouted "You are killing Americans" at Trump during the speech, while Omar also described him as a "liar." Trump said in a Truth Social post on Wednesday that the two congresswomen "had their eyes bulging and bloodshot like madmen… they are insane.. mentally deranged and ill.. frankly.. it seems they should be put in a mental institution." He added: "We must return them to where they came from.. as soon as possible." Both are American citizens.
