19 people died and 2569 others were injured, including 95 seriously, in 1887 traffic accidents recorded within urban areas during the week from February 23 to March 1.
A statement from the General Directorate of National Security attributed the main causes of these accidents, in order, to drivers' lack of attention, failure to yield the right of way, not maintaining a safe distance, excessive speed, pedestrians' lack of attention, failure to stop at the "stop" sign, lack of control, unauthorized lane changes, changing direction without signaling, driving on the left side of the road, faulty overtaking, failure to stop at the red light, and driving in the wrong direction. Regarding monitoring and penalties in the field of traffic, the same source explained that the security services were able to record 53,540 violations, draw up 9,590 reports referred to the Public Prosecution, and collect 43,950 reconciliation fines. The statement indicated that the amount collected reached 8,910,800 dirhams, while the number of vehicles placed in the municipal impound was 7133 vehicles, the number of documents withdrawn was 9590 documents, and the number of vehicles that were stopped was 794 vehicles.
