FIFA President: “A key measure for the future of football”
FIFA will continue to monitor the impact of this measure.
Procedure encouraged for competitions at all levels
FIFA has issued guidelines for all teams participating in the Paris 2024 Olympic Football Tournaments regarding the measure allowing only team captains to address the referee in certain situations.
FIFA encourages the implementation of this procedure by competition organisers worldwide, if they so wish, from the elite level down to the lower level.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino stressed the importance of this measure: “Without referees, there is no football. Protecting match officials and ensuring they are treated with respect is fundamental to the future of football. Implementing measures such as ‘captains only’ is essential to uphold the spirit of football and protect those who uphold its laws.”
The chairman of the FIFA Referees Committee, Pierluigi Collina, also welcomed the initiative: “This is an important step based on the general idea of improving fairness and respect in football while allowing an open dialogue between the referee and the teams. As we have seen in the past, measures that defend football end up being accepted.”
