Mexico will deploy approximately 100,000 security personnel, including military personnel, police officers, and private security, to ensure the security of the matches scheduled on its soil at the 2026 World Cup, according to authorities announced on Friday.
This decision comes in the wake of a new wave of violence witnessed by the country after the killing of a senior drug lord. Last month, dozens of people were killed, cars were burned, stores were closed, roads were cut off, and an atmosphere of terror prevailed, paralyzing most parts of the country after the killing of Nemesio Oseguera, nicknamed "El Mencho," the leader of the Jalisco Cartel during a military operation on February 22. Mexico hosts 13 matches in the World Cup finals, sharing hosting with its neighbors the United States and Canada, including four in Guadalajara, the stronghold of the Jalisco Cartel.
