In a democratic scene reflecting the vitality of political life, Italians voted against the judicial reform project, where the "No" option has so far obtained 53.1% against 46.9% in favor of "Yes", in a referendum that witnessed wide participation inside and outside the country, especially from members of the Italian community holding Italian citizenship.
This vote was not just a stance on a legal project, but carried clear political messages, most notably the adherence of a large segment of voters to the independence of the judiciary and the rejection of any changes that might affect the balance of powers. It also showed the extent of the division within Italian society regarding institutional reform issues. The result is considered a political blow to Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, who supported this reformist approach within the framework of her government program. In contrast, the opposition forces hastened to consider what happened a victory for democracy, and proof that voters are able to influence the course of public policies through the ballot boxes. And in this context, the importance of the participation of the Italian community abroad is highlighted, which contributed in its role in this entitlement, confirming its connection to internal affairs despite the geographical distance, and its role in tipping the scales of national discussions. And with the escalation of calls to hold the government accountable, the question remains open about how Meloni will deal with this result, between the option of reviewing the reform project or searching for alternative formulas to overcome this political setback, at a time when eyes are turning to the next stage and what it may hold of developments on the Italian scene.
