The friendly match hosted by the Allianz Stadium in Turin on Tuesday evening witnessed widespread controversy after the Algerian flag appeared small compared to the Uruguayan flag during the entrance of the two teams onto the field and the playing of the national anthems.
Footage circulated showed the Uruguayan flag in a large and clear size, while the Algerian flag appeared in a miniaturized form, which observers considered an insult to the symbolism of the national flag and a violation of the protocol adopted in such matches.
The incident sparked a wave of interaction on social media, where a number of activists expressed their displeasure, demanding that the organizing bodies provide clarifications on the circumstances of this difference in the display of the two flags.
Algerian media personality Walid Kabir, in a post published on his Facebook page, held the Algerian Football Federation responsible for what he called "the insult."
No official comment has been issued, as of this hour, by the sports authorities in Italy regarding the incident, which has revived the controversy over respecting national symbols in international sporting events.
