Spanish fans present at the Espanyol club stadium in Barcelona chanted anti-Muslim slogans during their team's friendly match against Egypt in preparation for the World Cup, despite the participation of Lamine Yamal, who has Moroccan origins.
Marca newspaper reported that many Spanish fans chanted a disgraceful slogan, which was quickly joined by an increasing number of those present, which meant "The Muslim is the one who doesn't jump," and the chant was repeated a few minutes later. During the break between the two halves, a message appeared on the giant screen at the stadium stating: We remind you that the legislation on the prevention of violence in sport prohibits and punishes participation in acts of violence or behaviors hostile to foreigners or of a racist nature. The stadium management requested through the loudspeakers that the fans refrain from chanting racist or disrespectful slogans. The report added: A few minutes after the start of the second half, the incident was repeated again, but this time it was met with boos from a large segment of the audience, while the same warning was rebroadcast through the loudspeakers.
