US President Donald Trump said Washington may have gone too far in targeting Iranian leaders, considering that it should have stopped at the first or second level of escalation.
Speaking at an election rally in Youngstown, Ohio, Trump touched on the difficulties Washington faces in its pursuit of a diplomatic solution to the conflict with Tehran. He said, "Perhaps we have gone too far in dealing with the leaders; we no longer know exactly who we are dealing with. Frankly, we are having difficulty identifying who to deal with, and I believe we have crossed the line." He added, "We could have settled for the first level, but moving to the second and second and a half levels may have been an exaggeration and crossing the line," claiming that "no one wants to be president of Iran, and potential candidates are not ready to take this position."
