The Minister of Justice and Freedoms, Abdellatif Wahbi, sparked widespread controversy with provocative statements about the legal framework related to the possibility of organizing the World Cup in Morocco, questioning the readiness of national legislation to keep pace with a global sporting event of this size.
The Minister of Justice said during an intervention at the Faculty of Law in Souissi, Rabat: "Do all these laws that we have in Morocco take us to the World Cup? I don't know?", asking: "Will we ask for a marriage contract for those who enter hotels?". Wahbi added: "The famous Portuguese player Cristiano Ronaldo has several children and does not have a marriage contract, so will we ask him for a marriage contract if he stays at one of Rabat's hotels?". He wondered: "Will you tell a German who will play football against a British: You must not drink alcohol in the street? They are always under the influence of alcohol, so will you apply the penal text to them? And you want to organize the World Cup? You must decide?". The Minister of Justice stressed that "if you want to organize the World Cup, you must bring all the laws and legislation that accompany it, and if you do not want these laws and legislation, do not organize the World Cup from the origin."
