HIBAPRESS – Abdellatif Baraka
Sardine prices in Morocco have begun to see a noticeable decrease, with the price per kilogram falling from around 20 dirhams to around 10 dirhams in a number of markets, an indication of a gradual return to balance within the fish market.
Professionals attribute this decline to the abundance of supply following the end of the biological rest period, which is imposed annually on surface fish in order to preserve fish stocks. With the resumption of marine fishing activities naturally, the quantities offered have increased, which directly reflected on prices.
Stable climatic conditions during the recent period also contributed to improving the efficiency of fishing trips, which enhanced the supply of markets with sufficient quantities, not only of sardines, but also of other types of popular fish.
Available data indicate that prices are likely to decline further in the coming weeks, especially if the supply rate continues to rise, in exchange for stable demand, which may ease the pressure on the purchasing power of Moroccan families.
This transformation reflects the beginning of a phase of stability in the fish market, after a period of fluctuations, amid hopes that prices will remain at reasonable levels that allow consumers to access this essential product at a suitable price.
