27 people died and 3105 others were injured, including 116 seriously, in 2243 traffic accidents recorded within urban areas during the week from April 27 to May 3.
A statement from the General Directorate of National Security attributed the main causes of these accidents, in order, to drivers' inattention, failure to yield the right of way, excessive speed, pedestrians' inattention, failure to maintain a safe distance, lack of control, changing direction without signaling, changing direction illegally, failure to stop at the "stop" sign, driving in the wrong direction, driving on the left side of the road, failure to stop at the red light, drunk driving, and improper overtaking. Regarding the monitoring and punishment operations in the field of traffic, the same source explained that the security services were able to record 50,184 violations, prepare 8,006 reports referred to the Public Prosecution, and collect 42,178 settlement fines. The statement indicated that the amount collected reached 9,430,150 dirhams, while the number of vehicles placed in the municipal impound reached 5,169 vehicles, the number of documents withdrawn was 8,006 documents, and the number of vehicles that were stopped was 509 vehicles.
