Morocco continues to implement major projects to modernize its infrastructure, planning to spend approximately 5 billion dirhams (equivalent to $547 million) to develop the road network leading to the Grand Hassan II Stadium, currently under construction near Casablanca, as part of the preparations to host the 2030 World Cup.
According to data reported by Bloomberg, citing the Ministry of Equipment and Water, the plan includes investments of approximately 3.9 billion dirhams to construct new roads and improve road connections to the stadium, in addition to parallel projects aimed at facilitating traffic flow within the Casablanca area. The strategy also includes allocating approximately 1.25 billion dirhams to create new road axes connecting the economic capital to its surrounding areas, as part of improving access to major sports facilities. Estimates also indicate that the total investments related to the 2030 World Cup in Morocco may reach approximately $20 billion, which is equivalent to about 12% of the gross domestic product, with a significant reliance expected on local bank financing. In a related context, the Moroccan authorities are studying the expansion of the highway network by nearly 40%, by adding approximately 763 kilometers, which includes projects connecting major cities such as Beni Mellal, Fez, and Marrakech, in addition to a new road axis connecting Tangier to Tetouan in the north of the country.
