HIBAPRESS – Tetouan
Customs authorities, in coordination with National Security elements at the Bab Sebta border crossing, managed this Friday evening to foil a sophisticated attempt to smuggle a significant quantity of gold. This occurred during a routine inspection, resulting in the seizure of approximately 2.870 kilograms of the precious metal.
According to informed sources, the behavior of the driver of a light vehicle, a "Volkswagen Touran," with Spanish license plates, raised suspicions among customs and security elements. The vehicle was subjected to a thorough search, revealing the smuggled gold carefully concealed within modified cavities in the car's floor, in an attempt to deceive and avoid customs inspection. This successful operation reflects the high degree of vigilance and professionalism demonstrated by National Security and customs elements at the Bab Sebta border crossing, through countering various smuggling and cross-border crime operations, within the framework of ongoing efforts aimed at protecting the national economy and enhancing border security. The operation was described as exceptional, given the rarity of this type of case in recent years, as customs authorities have not recorded similar operations related to the seizure of smuggled gold at the same crossing for a long time. An investigation has been opened under the supervision of the competent authorities, in order to determine all the circumstances and details of this case, and to uncover the potential extensions of the smuggling network associated with this operation.
