Argentina is showing keen interest in Moroccan expertise in the field of seawater desalination, a crucial technique for alleviating water stress.

Gonzalo Meschengieser, president of the Argentine Water Chamber (CAA), recently praised Morocco’s progress in this area and expressed the wish to see cooperation between the two nations.

“Morocco has valuable experience in desalination, which Argentina greatly needs,” Meschengieser said. He particularly highlighted Morocco’s program to build 20 desalination plants by 2030, citing the Casablanca plant as an example, which is renowned for its size and advanced technology.

Morocco aims to produce around 1.7 billion cubic meters of water per year through these stations, a goal included in the National Drinking Water Supply and Irrigation Program 2020-2027. This program aims to secure access to drinking water for citizens and support the country’s agriculture.

Mr. Meschengieser also highlighted the potential for collaboration between Argentina and Morocco. “Our two countries can mutually benefit from each other’s experiences,” he said, noting that the CAA, which brings together all companies in the water and sanitation sector in Argentina, is ready to explore partnerships with the Kingdom.

A particularly interesting aspect of the Moroccan experience is the integration of renewable energies into desalination processes. In Argentina, the high cost of energy remains a major obstacle to the development of desalination. The Moroccan model, which uses techniques such as reverse osmosis coupled with renewable energies, could offer viable solutions to this problem.

In addition, Mr. Meschengieser discussed water basin management and the development of water master plans, areas in which Argentina has acquired solid experience. He expressed his belief that cooperation between the two countries could lead to significant improvements in water resources management.
