The hyperandrogenism of Algerian boxer Imane Khelif, who competes in the women’s category of the boxing Olympics, has caused a controversy that demonstrates the confusion between intersexuality and transsexuality.
This is the sequence that rekindles a very divisive debate. In the eighth finals of the 66 kg women’s boxing tournament, Algerian Imane Khelif found herself facing Italian Angela Carini. Khelif very quickly dominated the match, with very powerful blows to the face of her opponent, who had to give up continuing the fight after less than a minute of the match. Carini was inconsolable, in tears, on her knees in the middle of the ring, while Khelif had just triumphed.
But, taking the Italian’s defeat badly, some commentators considered this victory unfair, considering that the boxer Imane Khelif cannot compete in the women’s category given her hyperandrogenism.
By conflating intersexuality and transsexuality, many personalities have had transphobic reactions, such as the Italian politician Matteo Salvini, the novelist JK Rowling, or even Donald Trump or Elon Musk.
