Rabat and Tel Aviv have agreed to elevate the level of diplomatic representation between the two countries to the embassy level, alongside the appointment of ambassadors, according to a joint Moroccan-American-Israeli statement issued following a diplomatic meeting in New York.
The agreement came after a meeting that brought together Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita and his Israeli counterpart Gabi Ashkenazi, in the presence of the US Ambassador to the UN, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, where the three parties reiterated their commitment to a set of measures aimed at strengthening relations between Morocco and Israel.
The statement stipulated "raising the level of diplomatic relations between the two countries, and elevating their diplomatic missions to the level of embassies, and appointing ambassadors."
The joint statement indicated that the establishment of "full, peaceful, and friendly diplomatic relations" between Morocco and Israel is in the "mutual interest of both countries" and contributes to strengthening the path to peace.
The statement did not specify a date for the opening of the two embassies, while the two sides agreed to complete a number of economic agreements before the end of the year, in addition to organizing high-level reciprocal visits in the coming months.
This agreement comes in the context of relations that resumed between Morocco and Israel in 2020, within the framework of the Abraham Accords sponsored by the United States, where the diplomatic missions in Rabat and Tel Aviv have been operating in the form of liaison offices since then.
