HIBAPRESS – Mohamed Zerouih
The professional community in Morocco's attention is directed today, Saturday, to the meeting of the General Assembly of Moroccan Bar Associations, at a time when the legal arena is rife with escalating tension. In this context, the Federation of Young Lawyers' Associations issued a decisive statement titled "For This, Lawyering Exists," through which it affirmed its categorical rejection of any retreat from the option of escalating the struggle and called for professional unity to confront current challenges.
This firm stance reinforces the choice of a complete halt in providing professional services and continuing various forms of protest. Through its statement, the federation seeks to pressure the General Assembly to remain at the forefront of the professional battle, considering that the current stage does not tolerate any retreat from the previously taken militant decisions in defense of lawyers' interests.
The crisis does not stop at the usual vocational demands, but rather goes beyond them to touch the core of the independence of the legal profession and its status within the justice system. The federation believes that the current dispute has evolved from a mere discussion of technical provisions and professional regulations into an existential battle related to protecting the role of the lawyer as a fundamental bastion for defending individual and public rights and freedoms.
In reviewing the situation, the human rights body recalled the honorable historical record of the legal profession in Morocco. It reminded of the pioneering roles played by lawyers through pivotal moments in confronting tyranny and consolidating human rights awareness, considering that abandoning the language of protest today amounts to a dereliction of a deeply rooted historical legacy that obliges current generations to preserve it and not compromise on it.
According to the federation's perspective, the future of the profession is closely linked to the extent of lawyers' steadfastness in the face of what it considers attempts to undermine their independence. Therefore, the current battle is merely a new link in a long and continuous path to defend the principles of justice and the rule of law, which reflects the depth of the crisis and the seriousness of professional concerns.
It is worth noting that this new escalation falls within a broader context of tension related to Draft Law No. 66.23 concerning the organization of the profession. While awaiting the outcomes of the meeting of the General Assembly of Moroccan Bar Associations, the situation is likely to see further developments in light of the youth's insistence on escalation versus the human rights street awaiting the fate of this hot issue.
