The Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccans Abroad, Nasser Bourita, affirmed on Friday in New York that Morocco's candidacy for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council for the 2028-2029 term reflects the Kingdom's weight and its position as an active and credible player at both regional and international levels.

Bourita explained to the press on the sidelines of his participation as head of the Moroccan delegation to the 81st session of the UN General Assembly that this candidacy is based on "a diplomatic approach deeply rooted in ancient traditions," guided by the insightful vision of His Majesty King Mohammed VI on major global issues, in addition to the experience the Kingdom has accumulated over centuries."

The minister added that whether it concerns climate change, development, the fight against terrorism, or major regional issues, "Morocco will address these files with a clear and defined vision," noting that the elections for the non-permanent seats on the Security Council will be held in June 2027.

In this regard, he highlighted the various initiatives launched by the Kingdom in several fields, considering that Moroccan diplomacy, under the leadership of His Majesty the King, is a bearer of several initiatives at the regional and multilateral levels.

Bourita pointed out, in this context, the opening for signature of the "African Convention on the Demobilization, Disarmament, and Reintegration of Child Soldiers," sponsored by the Kingdom of Morocco, which was signed this week by many African countries.

Speaking about the "Atlantic African States process," Bourita indicated that the eighth ministerial meeting of the process, held on Friday in New York, shows that this initiative has reached a stage of maturity and is increasingly owned by the member states, making it a reference initiative.

The minister, in this framework, praised Gabon's commitment to hosting a meeting dedicated to the Atlantic African States process, while Cape Verde will host a workshop bringing together experts and actors in maritime security, noting that Morocco, for its part, will host the ninth ministerial meeting of the process.

He highlighted that this increasingly strengthening initiative today contributes to transforming maritime corridors into a "structured space for cooperation," at a time when the world continues to face geopolitical tensions and conflicts that negatively affect trade and maritime navigation.

The 81st session of the General Assembly also provided an opportunity for Morocco to present an initiative focused on public-private partnerships in development, during a meeting co-organized with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) under the theme: "Financing the Future: Public-Private Partnerships for Investment in Development."

Bourita also recalled Morocco's co-chairmanship, alongside the UN Secretary-General and the President of the General Assembly, of the Global Conference to Combat Hate Speech by Promoting Dialogue and Coexistence among Religions and Cultures.

This conference, co-organized by Morocco with the UN Office for the Prevention of Genocide and the Responsibility to Protect, and the Alliance of Civilizations, contributed to strengthening the role of dialogue and tolerance in preventing hate speech and consolidating social cohesion.

Bourita concluded that Morocco, through these initiatives, is offering constructive responses and solutions, while providing spaces for dialogue on issues of concern to the countries participating in the works of the UN General Assembly.
