The council of the occupied city of Ceuta, during a session held on Tuesday, rejected an initiative presented by the "Vox" party to affirm what it described as "full and indisputable Spanish sovereignty" over Ceuta, Melilla, the Ja'farīyah Islands, Peñón de Vélez de la Gomera, and Alhucemas Island, and to strengthen the political and security response to the repercussions of the events of July 30 and 31.
The initiative received four supporting votes against 17 rejecting votes, as it did not gain the support of the "People's Party," the "Spanish Socialist Workers' Party," "MDyC," and "Ceuta Now." "Vox" defended its proposal by considering the July events an "invasion," demanding the reinforcement of the city's security and the reaffirmation of Spanish sovereignty.
The People's Party justified its rejection of the initiative by considerations related to the way it was presented and the lack of consensus around it, while "MDyC" and "Ceuta Now" criticized what they considered to be a political exploitation of the crisis by "Vox," deeming that issues of this nature should not be turned into a tool for party conflict within the council.
