The Preliminary Criminal Chamber of the Court of Appeal in Tangier, on Thursday, October 8, 2026, acquitted the accused "Mohamed" of the charge of participation in attempted rape, while convicting him of failure to report a felony and sentencing him to five months of effective imprisonment, along with a civil compensation of 20,000 dirhams for the complainant.
The case concerns an incident that dates back to June 2024, involving a young woman from the Moroccan community residing in the Netherlands.
During the trial, the complainant recounted her version of events, stating she was beaten and nearly assaulted inside an apartment in the Malabata area, before being taken to a clinic and later abandoned in the street, according to her statements.
Conversely, the defense of the accused pointed to contradictions between her statements and her friend's testimony, denying the involvement of his client in the alleged acts.
The complainant's defense also raised allegations of threats against her from the other accused, who is still at large, while "Mohamed's" defense argued that the case lacked sufficient evidence and suggested the possibility of prior disputes between the parties.
These claims remain subject to differing stances between the two sides, pending what the judicial proceedings may reveal about the absconding accused.
