The 34th edition of this prestigious competition will remain marked by thrilling matches, unexpected twists and surprises as if it were raining. When we take stock, it appears that investments in the development of African football are now resulting in an increase in the general level.

Not content with winning their first finals match, Namibia and Mauritania both progressed through the first round for the first time in their history. Cape Verde, for its part, signed its first success in a knockout match. It was no less necessary to open the doors to the quarter-finals, after having dominated a group in which Ghana, Egypt and Mozambique also appeared. A rare enough fact to be highlighted: none of the eight teams present in the quarter-finals had reached this stage of the competition two years ago in Cameroon.

The extremely competitive nature of this edition further shows that CAF made the right decision by expanding the field of its flagship competition to 24 teams (compared to 16 in 2019).

An ardent advocate for the development of football in Africa, Gianni Infantino recently attended several matches of the new African Football League. This project, launched last year by CAF with the support of FIFA, is above all a showcase for African clubs. It should allow players to compete more frequently against the best teams on the continent, but also contribute to the increase in commercial revenues and media rights in Africa.
