Ukrainian forces have been operating on Russian territory since August 6, the first incursion into Russia since World War II.
kyiv said on Thursday that it had advanced 35 kilometres deeper into the Kursk border region. This would mean, according to theAFPa total control of 1150 km2 and 82 localities, eight additional localities compared to Tuesday.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky welcomed the capture of the town of Sudja, a town of some 5,500 people located about ten kilometers from the border. It is the largest town to fall under the control of Ukrainian forces in the incursion into Russian soil.
Sudja is home to a measuring station for Russian natural gas that flows through Ukrainian pipelines to Europe. Natural gas from Western Siberia is actually transported through pipelines that pass through Sudja and cross the border into the Ukrainian network.
