France records a sharp increase in racist crimes

Racist and xenophobic crimes increased by 32% in 2023 in France compared to 2022, according to a report from the Ministry of the Interior.

According to the ministry's statistics service, the police and gendarmerie have recorded approximately “15,000 offenses committed on ethnic, national, racial or religious grounds throughout France, including 8,500 crimes or misdemeanors.”

The service noted “a clear acceleration of these crimes and offenses at the end of the year” in a context of tensions in the Middle East.

The number of anti-Semitic acts recorded in France has increased since the attack carried out by Hamas in southern Israel on October 7.

The report also highlighted a doubling of the number of crimes recorded during the last quarter of 2023 compared to the same period in 2022.

The report states that “this increase was observed more precisely from October onwards, with the level of crimes remaining high in November before declining in December”.
