On Thursday, August 22, in the Agbal community of Berkane province, the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries, Rural Development, Water and Forests, Mohamed Seddiqi, chaired the opening ceremony of the fifth edition of the regional fig festival “Kermos Agbal”. He was accompanied by the governor of Berkane province, the head of the Agbal community, elected officials of the region, the head of the National Association of Sheep and Goat Breeders, the Director General of the National Office for Agricultural Consultation and a delegation of ministry officials.
The festival is organized by the National Office of Agricultural Consulting, in partnership with the Agbal Collective Council and the Garmaun Association of Agbal Fig Producers, from August 22 to 25, under the slogan “Figs are a lever for the development of flexible and sustainable production systems.”
This event aims to highlight the qualifications of the fig sector in the Eastern region, to encourage the exchange of experiences between professionals, and to explore the possibilities of development of this sector, in particular through the professional organization and supervision of producers.
The organization of this socio-economic event is part of the development of the regional agricultural plan, with the aim of making known the qualifications of the Agbal community and highlighting its specificities on the cultural and natural levels.
Nationally, the area allocated to fig cultivation is estimated at around 70,000 hectares and production is estimated at around 120,000 tonnes.
In the East, fig cultivation extends over an area of more than 1,380 hectares with an estimated production of 3,000 tonnes, including 640 hectares in the Berkane region, with an estimated production of around 1,200 tonnes.
