Morocco’s cloud seeding project for rain seeding worries Spain

The Spanish website El Tiempo reported in a report titled “Morocco’s rain seeding plans and how they threaten Spain” that Rabat has launched a cloud seeding strategy, which could affect Spain.

The Spanish website indicates that, given the dangerous situation and the lack of resources, Morocco has had various water management plans for decades, including cloud seeding, a program that the Kingdom, although not new, intends to strengthen to increase rainfall.

Concretely, the Moroccan government has allocated around 10 million euros from 2023 to encourage cloud seeding with the aim of artificially generating rain and somehow alleviating the structural drought affecting the Kingdom.

. The Spanish website, however, points out that it must be taken into account that cloud seeding is not innovative, as it has been practiced for several decades with varying results. Since the 1980s, Morocco has been looking for different ways to increase water supply through climate modification, also known as “climate geoengineering.”

Some experts say cloud seeding can increase rainfall by up to 4%, thereby increasing agricultural yields by up to 20%.

El Tiempo claims that the implementation of these projects has raised doubts in the region, especially in neighboring regions such as southern Spain.
