AU: Morocco and Algeria are already competing to secure the rotating vice-presidency of the institution, next February
HIBAPRESS-RABAT
The battle for the succession of the Chadian Moussa Faki Mahamat as President of the Commission of the African Union (AU) in February 2025 has officially been launched and, as can be expected, is currently being played out behind the scenes, because many positions to be filled after the end of his mandate, in particular that of Vice-President which must return to North Africa, have just heated up the galley between, naturally, Morocco and Algeria which are already competing to win this rotating presidency of the institution.
Candidates will be exclusively from East Africa, in accordance with the principle of rotation established by the reform of the AU bodies in 2018. This mechanism will allow a national from this region to lead the Commission until 2029.
But another battle between Morocco and Algeria has already begun. It is being played out around the position of first vice-president of the African Union, a seat that should return to North Africa. Morocco has all the assets to seize this key position, because it counts on a dynamic and vigilant Diplomacy.
