Tanger Med in the world's top 20 container ports

Tanger Med has joined the world's top 20 container ports, according to the latest reference ranking published this March by the maritime analysis company Alphaliner.

Tanger Med thus climbs 3 places in this ranking, now placing itself 19th in the world out of 500 container ports in the world, according to the ranking of Alphaliner, based in France.

The Kingdom thus enters the restricted club of the 12 other countries appearing in this world top 20, alongside China, Singapore, Korea, America, Hong Kong, the United Arab Emirates, Malaysia, the Netherlands , Belgium, Thailand, Taiwan and Vietnam. It becomes the first African country to have entered this world top 20.

In 2023, Tanger Med, whose integration into the world top 20 was planned for 2027, surpassed important ports, such as those of New York and Hamburg, ranked respectively 21st and 22nd globally.

At the European level, it dethrones the 3rd port in Europe in this ranking and is positioned after the port of Rotterdam (13th) and Antwerp/Bruges (15th), while no Spanish port appears in this world Top 20.

As a reminder, in 2022, the port of Valencia was ranked 30th in the world, followed by the port of Piraeus (Greece) in 31st place. The port of Algeciras was ranked 42nd in the world.

According to the Alphaliner ranking, Tangier Med also experienced in 2023 the 2nd best annual evolution in percentage in this world top 20, with an increase of +13.4%, after Qingdao (16.9%).
