The United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) Food Waste Index 2024 highlights that food waste continues to harm the global economy and fuel climate change, nature loss and pollution.
“Food waste is a global tragedy. Millions of people will go hungry today as food is wasted around the world. Not only is this a major development problem, but the consequences of this unnecessary waste have substantial costs for the climate and nature,” said UNEP Executive Director Inger Andersen.
The report, produced in collaboration with WRAP, a UK-based NGO, establishes the most accurate global estimate of food waste at the retail and consumer levels and offers advice to countries to improve data collection as well as good practices to move from measurement to reduction of food waste.
