The data confirms that food waste is not just a ‘rich country’ problem, as household food waste levels differ from the average levels observed for high, upper-middle and lower-middle income countries by only 7 kg per inhabitant.
At the same time, warmer countries appear to generate more food waste per capita in households, which could be explained by a greater consumption of fresh foods containing a large amount of inedible parts and the absence of a solid cold chain.
According to recent data, food loss and waste generates 8-10% of global annual greenhouse gas emissions – almost five times those of the aviation sector – and a significant loss of biodiversity by occupying space. equivalent to almost a third of the planet’s agricultural land.
