The management of the American aircraft manufacturer, Boeing, has just proposed a 35% salary increase to put an end to the strike of its machinists which has paralyzed the American giant’s production line for more than a month.
The offer, which also includes benefits, promises to convince Boeing’s unionized workers to return to their jobs and allows the company to refocus on its multiple financial difficulties.
“We have received a proposal to end the strike, and it deserves to be presented to the members,” the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, which represents 33,000 of the striking workers, said in a statement.
“We are working to finalize the strike settlement agreement, as well as additional contract details to give you a clear idea of the offer,” the union said to its members.
In addition to an overall 35% salary increase, the new deal includes improvements to retirement benefits and a $7,000 signing bonus. The agreement will be presented to unionists for a vote on Wednesday.
The offer comes less than a week after the failure of negotiations with the machinists’ union, and the announcement, at the start of the week, of the gradual elimination of 17,000 jobs, or 10% of the American manufacturer’s workforce.
Boeing has been experiencing unprecedented financial difficulties for several years, which have continued to worsen since the start of 2024.
The company said it expects a third-quarter loss of nearly $5 billion. Over the past five years, Boeing has lost more than $25 billion.
