CAF reduces its deficit from 28.9 million USD to 9.2 million USD It records the largest distribution of financial support to Member Associations and Zonal Unions With the reduction in the deficit and the skyrocketing income, financial allocations increase by 40%. The Confederation of African Football (“CAF”) published the 2022-2023 audited financial report and the 2024-2025 budget during the 46th CAF Ordinary Assembly held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, on Tuesday, October 22, 2024 .
The 46th Ordinary Assembly of CAF was chaired by the President of CAF, Dr Patrice Motsepe.
CAF achieved a significant financial turnaround in the 2022-2023 financial year, with a remarkable reduction in losses from US$28.9 million to US$9.2 million.
A year earlier, CAF’s deficit stood at $45 million. This continued positive development is mainly attributed to the strategic reforms implemented by CAF management in 2021.
On budgeted revenues in 2024-25, CAF forecasts a net profit of $11.7 million – for the first time in a long time.
This financial health will allow CAF to fulfill its mandate of developing football in Africa.
Under the leadership of CAF President, Dr Patrice Motsepe, CAF achieved the highest revenues in CAF competitions with media rights and sponsorship revenues continuing to increase significantly.
The increase in revenue has enabled CAF to increase its financial support to Member Associations and the football development programme. More funds than ever before are being allocated to grassroots development programs, from school football to match officials and television production.
At the 46th CAF Ordinary Assembly, CAF President Dr Patrice Motsepe confirmed the 100% increase in annual financial assistance (grants) for member associations to USD 400,000 (from 200 000 in 2021) – an important moment for nations who have struggled to finance football activities.
Expenses
The decision to allocate a significant portion of spending, more precisely 84%, to the development of African football, is a strategic move that underlines CAF’s commitment to nourishing and growing the football ecosystem.
Endowment and support to the host association USD 56 million: This represents the largest portion of the expenditure, showing a continued focus on rewarding excellence through distributions to national teams, clubs and supporting organizations responsible for the organization of competitions.
Competition Organization USD 28.1 million: This allocation covered costs associated with the planning and execution of football competitions, ensuring a high-quality experience for players, officials and fans.
Football Development Programs $32.3 million: This investment directly supported CAF’s 10-point promise to develop football from the grassroots to the professional level.
This strategic reinvestment underlines CAF’s desire to use its financial resources to improve African football and create a sustainable football ecosystem.
Investment areas
CAF is significantly increasing its investment in football development for the 2024-2025 fiscal year. An overall investment of $29.8 million is planned in the areas below:
– CAF subsidy to member associations increased by 100% (from $200,000 per AM in 2020-2021 to $400,000 per AM in 2024-2025).
– CAF subsidy to zones increased by 50% (from $500,000 per zone in 2020-2021 to $750,000 per zone in 2024-2025).
– Introduction of a $50,000 allocation for clubs eliminated during the preliminary stages of the CAF Champions League and the CAF Confederation Cup.
