Construction work on the Sidi Abbou dam, located about 40 km southeast of Taounate, on Oued El Laban, is making remarkable progress, with a progress rate reaching 80 percent. The work should be completed in August 2025. That is to say one year ahead of schedule.
This performance reflects the experience and commitment of the Moroccan teams mobilized, responsible for all the studies, implementation and quality control of this ambitious project.
This project, led by the Ministry of Equipment and Water, is part of a global strategy to develop the water resources of the Sebou Basin.
This water installation, which represents an investment amounting to 1.28 billion dirhams, aims to meet the growing water needs of the region and support its socio-economic development.
Nayar Zakaria, responsible for the preparation of the Sidi Abbou dam, underlined the strategic importance of this water structure for the Taounate region and the Sebou hydrographic basin.
He explained that the Sidi Abbou dam is considered one of the most important hydraulic projects in the region, reviewing in the same context the main characteristics of this hydraulic development.
He continued that this dam will allow the creation of a water reservoir of up to 200 million cubic meters, extending over a total area estimated at 833 hectares between the regions of Taounate and Taza.
He pointed out that the dam construction project includes two basic engineering facilities: The first facility is the main one and is of the compacted concrete type. Its height on the foundations is 72 meters, its length at the top is 148 meters, and the total volume of concrete is 240 thousand cubic meters.
The second part, according to the director of dam preparation, concerns the Al-Faj checkpoint, which is a complementary checkpoint to the dam closure on the left bank of the dam. It is earth type and its height on the foundations is 41 meters, and its length at the top is more than a kilometer, while the total volume of the land is more than 2 million cubic meters.
Regarding the progress of the project completion works, Mr. Nayar indicated that they have reached 78 percent and are expected to be completed in August 2025. That is to say one year ahead of schedule.
The official confirmed that the project was carried out exclusively by Moroccan companies, and its positive effects on the development of the region.
He stressed that “this project was carried out by Moroccan studies and project management, and will contribute to the economic and social development of the region by stimulating tourist and agricultural activities, in particular thanks to the exploitation of bottled water , and by opening a group of roads to break the isolation of neighboring neighborhoods.
This installation will allow the creation of a large water reservoir. The dam is also equipped with two adjoining structures to ensure optimal management of water resources.
This water installation is also characterized by the presence of a load unloader, a bottom unloader, drinking water intakes, water intakes intended for agricultural purposes and hydroelectric water intakes.
This project will also help supply neighboring towns with drinking water, irrigate around 500 hectares with the bottom of the dam, protect against flooding and create around 360,000 work days during the completion phase.
Thus, the Sidi Abbou dam constitutes a strategic investment for the sustainable development of the Taounate region. This reflects Morocco’s commitment to integrated and sustainable management of water resources.
