HIBAPRESS-RABAT
Driss Roukh never ceases to impress us each time he makes a film in his own way which attracts satisfaction and compliments from all observers because he is a true connoisseur of everyday Moroccan life.
The film “El Watra”, 2024 97 minutes, directed by Driss Roukh, was presented as part of the official competition of the twenty-fourth National Film Festival (October 18-26).
It is summarized as follows: Chaàiba, a popular artist playing El watra, emigrates with his wife and son to the city to escape the drought. He turns to his cousin Mhrich, involved in criminal activities in Casablanca. His life becomes hell, leading to the loss of his family and illustrating the challenges of marginalized neighborhoods, where only the strongest survive.
Through Chaiba’s journey, “Al Watra” highlights the vulnerability of human beings in the face of an environment dominated by poverty. It also addresses the loss of bearings and the isolation that those, like Chaiba, can experience who find themselves trapped in a world that is beyond them.
It also explores the loss of bearings and the feeling of isolation experienced by Chaàiba and his peers who find themselves trapped in a universe managed by the law of the jungle. The audience who attended the screening appreciated the integration of Moroccan music and popular song into the narrative of the film “Al Watra”, in a fluid and appropriate manner.
