October 2024 was the wettest month ever recorded in Spain, the national meteorological agency (Aemet) announced on Friday, reporting a record rainfall in one hour during the violent floods that hit the southeast of the country. .

“The month of October was extremely rainy” in the country, with “an average value in peninsular Spain of 147 liters of precipitation per square meter”, or 14.7 centimeters, indicates Aemet in a press release.

This is “almost double” the usual average, according to the agency, which reports a record since records began in 1961, thus surpassing the years 1979 and 2003, the rainiest years until then.

October was also warmer than normal, with temperatures 0.9ºC above average for this time of year, largely due to nighttime temperatures, it said.

According to Aemet, the cumulative rainfall was particularly high during the bad weather which devastated the south-east of the country, particularly the Valencia region.

On October 29, DANA caused record rainfall in Turís (Valencia), with 771 l/m² in 24 hours, including 185 l/m² in just one hour, a figure “unprecedented in Spain for this period”, underlines the national agency.

These torrential rains caused exceptional flooding in the region, leaving at least 219 dead and several dozen missing, according to the authorities.
