Today Monday evening, Marrakech will transform into the capital of African football to host the CAF Awards 2024, a scintillating ceremony where the continent’s past and present stars will shine brightly. Under the sumptuous ceiling of the Palais des Congrès, from 7:00 p.m. local time (6:00 p.m. GMT / 8:00 p.m. in Cairo / 9:00 p.m. in East Africa), the elite of African football will be celebrated in an atmosphere combining glamour, prestige and emotions.
This annual meeting, a true ode to African sporting excellence, goes beyond the simple presentation of trophies. It offers a dive into the rich and vibrant heritage of continental football, while celebrating its emblematic figures and its promises for the future.
Legends and icons: the meeting of the immortals Former Malian playing master Seydou Keita, hero of more than 100 matches with his national team, single-handedly embodies the pinnacle of modern football. Between 2008 and 2012, this exceptional midfielder etched his name in the history of FC Barcelona, winning two UEFA Champions Leagues and accumulating trophies and titles in a team often described as legendary.
The elegant Egyptian Mohamed Zidan, meanwhile, marked the hearts of fans with his dizzying dribbles. Double African champion in 2008 and 2010, he also dominated the German Bundesliga with Borussia Dortmund, winning two consecutive titles in 2011 and 2012, a rare feat for an African player.
Kenyan colossus Victor Wanyama, a key figure in East African football, returns to the forefront. For more than 15 years, he has embodied the resilience and pride of his country, having led Kenya to historic qualification for the 2019 TotalEnergies CAN.
And to add a touch of magic outside the football world, the double Olympic 800 meters champion, Caster Semenya, will bring her brilliance and her aura. An exceptional athlete, his charisma and greatness transcend disciplines.
A tribute to the guardians of the temple and the pioneers of women’s football The unforgettable Cameroonian goalkeeper Joseph Antoine Bell, whose career spanned 17 years glorified by three participations in the FIFA World Cup with the Indomitable Lions, is another legend who will honor this exceptional evening with his presence. His name still resonates as a symbol of elegance and security between the posts.
Women’s football will not be left out. South African icon Portia Modise, the first African woman to reach the legendary milestone of 100 goals for the national team, will shine among her peers. Alongside her, former Ghanaian star Alberta Sackey and tireless Equatorial Guinean striker Genoveva Añonman will recall the fundamental impact of the pioneers in the development of women’s football on the continent.
An evening dedicated to history and the future It is impossible to talk about African legends without mentioning Fabrice Akwa, emblematic captain of Angola. His memorable goal against Rwanda, synonymous with historic qualification for the 2006 World Cup, remains engraved in the annals of African football. He will be there to relive, with emotion, this unforgettable feat.
The CAF Awards 2024 are not just a celebration; they symbolize the unity, diversity and greatness of African sport. In a sumptuous setting, among legendary figures and emerging stars, this ceremony will weave a timeless link between the generations who built the history of African football and those who are preparing its radiant future.
A dream evening in Marrakech, where the glorious past of African football will embrace its brilliant future.
