Mamelodi Sundowns striker Iqraam Rayners has set the tone for his team’s upcoming TotalEnergies CAF Champions League match against AS FAR of Morocco. The two teams will meet on Sunday at the Loftus Versfeld Stadium in a crucial duel which could determine first place in Group B.
Sundowns currently sit second with eight points from five matches, just one point behind leaders AS FAR. The match promises to be an intense battle with high stakes, knowing that Raja Casablanca, despite low hopes, can spring a surprise.
Rayners, who found the net for Sundowns in the first leg against AS FAR, believes his team must stay focused and stick to their game plan if they are to secure a victory. He expects a tough encounter, especially given the confidence AS FAR has built up after a strong campaign so far.
“Yes, they will come with a lot of confidence. They will fight, they will make it difficult for us, but we just have to be patient and be ourselves, and that is what will allow us to win the game,” Rayners said before the match.
AS FAR will likely take a cautious approach while looking to control the match to finish top of the group. However, Sundowns are determined to put pressure on their opponents and seize the opportunity to finish top of the table themselves.
“I just think they will stay behind, obviously, because they want to finish top of the group, but for us to finish top (of the table) we have to give our all. We have to win the game, score goals and that’s the spirit,” added Rayners. A speech which reflects the mentality of his team before this crucial meeting.
Sundowns have already proven themselves to be one of the best teams on the continent, but they will need to show all their strength and tactical discipline to ensure their qualification for the quarter-finals.
A victory today on Sunday would allow the South Africans to take the lead in Group B, while a draw would allow them to progress to the next round.
The team’s goal remains clear: stay patient, stick to the game plan and execute with precision. The pressure is on and the stakes are high, Sundowns will be determined to show their quality and put on a display on home soil.
The match promises to be an exciting one, with both teams vying for top spot in the group and a place in the next stage of Africa’s biggest club competition.
Fans can expect a thrilling duel as Sundowns look to keep their hopes alive and clinch their second continental title since their maiden triumph in 2016.
