Justin Trudeau reiterated Tuesday that Canada is prepared to respond “robustly” if U.S. President Donald Trump moves forward with his threat to impose tariffs on Canadian imports, barriers he called “unfair”.
The day before, President Trump said he was considering imposing tariffs of 25% on products imported from Canada and Mexico starting February 1. When he first raised these tariff threats last November, Mr. Trump had nevertheless promised to impose such obstacles on the first day of his mandate, January 20.
Mr. Trump accuses Canada and Mexico in particular of not acting against drug trafficking and the influx of illegal migrants to the United States. The federal government, for its part, affirms that it is in the interest of Canadians and Americans to protect the borders between the two countries, recalling that in mid-December, a plan worth 1.3 billion dollars to strengthen border security had been presented.
»If (the Trump administration) imposes unfair tariffs, (…) our response will be robust, rapid and measured, but very strong. The goal will be to get rid of these tariffs as quickly as possible and, to achieve this, everything is on the table.” Justin Trudeau, Prime Minister of Canada
Tuesday, during his press conference, Mr. Trudeau was accompanied by several ministers who had been meeting for two days in Montebello, in Outaouais. The Prime Minister assured that his Cabinet will continue to study the nature of the Canadian response if Mr. Trump carries out his tariff threats.
