The Federal Security Service of Russia (FSB) announced on Tuesday the neutralization of a member of a terrorist organization which planned to commit attacks in the capital’s metro and in the Moscow region.
“In the Moscow region, the terrorist activity of a citizen of the Russian Federation, originally from a country in Central Asia, a member of an international terrorist organization prohibited in Russia, has been thwarted,” the FSB said in a statement.
The individual in question planned to explode improvised explosive devices in a place of worship in the Moscow region and in a Moscow metro station, it is said.
“After the attack, the respondent planned to go to Afghanistan and join the ranks of the international terrorist organization,” said the same source.
“During his arrest, he opposed armed resistance to Russian FSB agents and was neutralized by response fire,” said the press release.
The suspect, who lent allegiance to a terrorist organization, carried out a recognition of the premises and bought components for the manufacture of an improvised explosive device, adds the same source.
“During searches at the suspect’s home, firearms, chemicals and components entering into the assembly of explosive devices were found and seized,” said.
Following the incident, the FSB survey unit for Moscow and its region launched a criminal procedure for the preparation of a terrorist attack and participation in the activities of a terrorist organization.
