The number of asylum applications in Germany reached 229,751 in 2024, against 329,120 in 2023, a decline that the government attributes to the tightening of its migration policy.
The Federal Minister of the Interior, Nancy Faeser, presented this government in Berlin on Tuesday in Berlin on Tuesday, raising “significant progress” in the fight against illegal immigration.
The downward trend in asylum applications has continued since the start of the year, with a withdrawal of 43% over the first two months compared to the same period last year, and 50.9% in comparison with the year 2023, the Ministry of the Interior said in a press release.
It also appears from this assessment that, since September 16, 2024, the date of entry into force of the generalization of border controls, the authorities have recorded 86,000 attempts at illegal entry, a refoulement of 50,000 migrants in an irregular situation and arrested 2,000 smugglers.
Regarding qualified workers, the same document indicates that 172,000 work visas were issued in 2024, an increase of 77% compared to 2021, while student visas amounted to 90,000, up 43% over the same period.
The migratory question is at the heart of the discussions underway with the SPD social democrats in order to form a government coalition led by Friedrich Merz, leader of the conservatives of the CDU/CSU, winners of the legislative elections on February 23. The two training courses have agreed to even more harden the country’s migration policy.
