The United Nations General Assembly adopted on Tuesday a resolution proclaiming on July 11 World Horse Day.
Supported by several countries, the resolution notes that the designation of a World Horse Day would offer the international community a global platform to raise awareness of the importance of horses and the equine sector in the development of sustainable agriculture.
The text indicates that the world currently has more than 57 million horses and that, in many countries, the equine sector contributes significantly to socio-economic development and the well-being of populations. This sector also contributes to improving the living conditions of equines, and, more particularly to daily life and the economic emancipation of rural and local populations, it is added from the same source.
The resolution also warns that the number of horses and the equine sector are, to a certain extent, declining worldwide due to the evolution of lifestyles, the pressure exerted in the sector, in particular by economic fluctuations, climate change and environmental factors.
Under this resolution, the UN calls on member states to raise public awareness of the economic and social importance that horses and the equine sector take, to promote the development of vocational training, scientific research, the dissemination of best practices in the equine sector and the improvement of the living conditions of equines, as well as to preserve the culture and the equine heritage.
