The arrest of a Spanish Civil Guard member by Moroccan authorities at the Beni Ensar border crossing between Nador and the occupied city of Melilla, while attempting to smuggle approximately 30 kilograms of hashish, has placed Spain’s far-right in an awkward position. This is especially true given their repeated accusations of Moroccan security forces’ lax approach to combating drug trafficking.
A thorough search of the Civil Guard member’s Spanish-registered vehicle revealed significant quantities of drugs hidden in secret compartments. The officer and his wife, who was with him, were immediately arrested and are currently under investigation. The involvement of a Spanish security force member in this operation is unprecedented, putting the far-right in Spain in an embarrassing situation, highlighting the contradiction between their rhetoric and reality, and embarrassing the Spanish government before domestic public opinion.
In March 2024, Vox party, through its spokesperson Jorge Buxadé, called on Brussels in the European Parliament to cut all aid to Morocco, accusing its security forces of collaborating with drug trafficking networks. In March 2025, they reiterated these accusations, alleging Moroccan complacency in confronting the issue.
To date, the far-right party remains silent on this incident, which exposes its contradictions and confirms the involvement of Spanish Civil Guard members in drug smuggling operations through the border crossings in Ceuta and Melilla.
