The Shuaa Human Rights Organization, which is concerned with monitoring human rights violations in Algeria, has demanded that the Spanish authorities not approve the extradition of the Algerian parliamentarian Abdelkader Djeddi, a member of the Senate elected from the state of Ouargla in 2019, who has been residing in Spain since he was forced to leave his country. This is due to what the organization described as "judicial and political prosecutions" that have been targeting him for years.
Abdelkader Djeddi is considered one of the most prominent political figures in southern Algeria, where he was elected to the Senate from Ouargla, and he was known for his critical positions on the policies of the existing regime, which made him – according to human rights organizations – subject to pressure campaigns and judicial follow-ups that led him to seek asylum abroad. In its statement addressed to the media, the Shuaa organization called on the Algerian authorities to annul the ruling issued against Djeddi, stop all judicial prosecutions against him, and guarantee his safety and the safety of his family members, stressing the need to stop using the judiciary as a means of settling political scores. The organization also warned that the continuation of these practices undermines the independence of the judiciary and the freedom of parliamentary work in Algeria, and weakens the credibility of its international obligations in the field of human rights and the rule of law.
