The Kremlin confirmed on Monday that Russia still believes the two-state solution is the only way to resolve the conflict in the Middle East, in response to a question about the decision of some Western countries to recognize a Palestinian state.
Britain, Canada, Australia, and Portugal all recognized a Palestinian state on Sunday in a move aimed at bolstering the two-state solution; this sparked an angry reaction from Israel.
The Kremlin spokesperson, Dmitry Peskov, told reporters, “We remain committed to the fundamental resolutions of the UN Security Council, and we remain committed to the international position on the possibility of resolving the Palestinian-Israeli conflict on the basis of a two-state solution,” according to Reuters.
He added, “This remains our approach, and we believe it is the only possible way to find a solution to this very long and complex conflict, which is perhaps now going through its most acute and tragic phases.”
