El Jadida is witnessing an unprecedented urban dynamic lately, turning its streets and neighborhoods into 24/7 construction sites. Local authorities are carrying out a series of projects including road rehabilitation, sidewalk widening, and improvements to the public lighting network, in addition to projects related to green spaces, sports, and cultural facilities.
These initiatives are part of a vision aimed at restoring El Jadida’s former glory as the “City of Flowers,” after years of decline that impacted the city’s aesthetics and the quality of life of its inhabitants. The areas undergoing renovations are beginning to show a different look; some neighborhoods are experiencing improved traffic flow, while new urban amenities are becoming apparent. However, this dynamism is also accompanied by criticism from some residents who express dissatisfaction with the length of the construction projects and the disruption they cause to their daily lives, particularly in terms of getting around the city center. Nevertheless, hope remains that these projects will have a positive impact in the medium term, transforming El Jadida into a modern city befitting its history and strategic location between Rabat and Casablanca. Residents are now awaiting the new face of their city and expect these urban promises to become a tangible reality, providing them with a higher-quality urban environment and restoring El Jadida’s status as one of the most beautiful cities on the Atlantic coast.
