The US Geological Survey announced on Tuesday that an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.7 on the Richter scale struck the Eastern Visayas region in the Philippines.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center confirmed that the earthquake, which occurred at a depth of approximately 11 kilometers, does not pose a tsunami threat. According to local authorities, there have been no immediate reports of casualties or major losses, while emergency teams have begun inspecting buildings and infrastructure in Cebu City and neighboring provinces. Videos showed a beauty queen pageant in Cebu City abruptly stopping after the building shook strongly during the earthquake. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology warned of the possibility of aftershocks in the coming days, urging residents to exercise caution and remain vigilant. It is worth noting that the Philippines lies within the "Ring of Fire" in the Pacific Ocean, known for its frequent seismic and volcanic activity, where weak and imperceptible earthquakes are often recorded, while strong and sudden earthquakes sometimes occur that are difficult to predict.
