The German Federal Prosecutor's Office announced the arrest of three individuals suspected of belonging to Hamas in Berlin on Wednesday, after weapons were found in their possession, as part of investigations into "potential attacks targeting Israeli or Jewish institutions in Germany."
The prosecution stated that the suspects, whom they described as "foreign agents" for Hamas, possessed an assault rifle, pistols, and a large amount of ammunition, noting that two of them hold German citizenship, while the third person was born in Lebanon and his nationality has not yet been definitively determined. The prosecution explained that the three had been working since at least the summer of 2025 to acquire firearms and ammunition in Germany on behalf of the movement. The suspects are to appear before an investigating judge on Thursday to decide on the public prosecutor's requests for their pre-trial detention. This arrest comes at a time when Berlin is affirming its strong support for Israel, as German Chancellor Friedrich Merz recently stated his desire to enable Jews to live, study, and celebrate safely throughout the country.
