The Nobel Prize in Medicine for 2025 was awarded on Monday to American researchers Marie E. Bronc, Fred Ramsdell, and Japanese scientist Shimon Sakaguchi, in recognition of their research on how the body controls the immune system.
The Nobel Committee announced that the prize recognizes "their discoveries concerning peripheral immune tolerance." Professor Marie Fahrin-Herlenius at the Karolinska Institute explained that "this year's Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine focuses on how we control our immune system, enabling us to combat any imaginable germ while avoiding autoimmune diseases." It is worth noting that the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine can be awarded to one, two, or three winners at the same time, who have conducted research on the same topic. Last year, the prize was awarded to American researchers Victor Ambros and Gary Ruvkun for their discovery of micro RNA and its role in regulating genes. The Physiology or Medicine Prize traditionally opens the annual week of announcements of the Nobel Prizes. In the following days, the winners of the Physics, Chemistry, Literature, Peace, and Economics prizes will be revealed. The Nobel Prizes will be officially presented on December 10, the anniversary of the death of Alfred Nobel (1833-1896), the inventor of dynamite and the founder of the prizes. Each prize this year carries a monetary value of 11 million Swedish krona (1.1 million US dollars).
