The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences announced on Wednesday the winners of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for 2025: Omar Yaghi, Susumu Kitagawa, and Richard Robson, in recognition of their pioneering contribution to the development of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs).
The Nobel Committee explained that the three researchers successfully created unique molecular structures distinguished by large spaces that allow the passage of gases and chemicals through them, enabling their use in extracting water from desert air, capturing carbon dioxide, and storing toxic gases.
The Jordanian-American winner, Omar Yaghi, holds the position of professor at the University of California, Berkeley, while the Japanese Susumu Kitagawa works as a professor at Kyoto University, and the British-born Richard Robson is a professor at the University of Melbourne in Australia.
Heiner Linke, chairman of the Nobel Committee for Chemistry, said during a press conference: "They have been able to create completely new materials containing internal cavities that can be likened to hotel rooms, into which molecules enter and leave freely."
The prize is worth 11 million Swedish krona (about 1.2 million US dollars), which is shared by the three winners, in addition to what it represents as the highest scientific recognition in the world.
It is worth mentioning that the Nobel Prize in Chemistry is the third in a series of Nobel Prizes this year, followed by the Literature Prize on Thursday, then Peace on Friday, and the awards conclude with the Prize in Economic Sciences on Monday, which is the only one not included in the will of dynamite inventor Alfred Nobel.
