French President Emmanuel Macron reappointed Sebastien Lecornu as Prime Minister on Friday and tasked him with forming a new government, a move aimed at breaking the political deadlock facing France with a divided parliament and the difficulty of approving austerity budgets.
The decision came four days after Lecornu's resignation, following lengthy negotiations with the leaders of the main political parties in the Elysee Palace. Lecornu confirmed via the "X" platform that he accepts the task "out of a sense of duty," indicating that the new government "must embody renewal" and that all issues raised during the consultations will be open for parliamentary discussion. Despite left-wing demands to appoint a Prime Minister from their faction, Macron informed party leaders that he would not choose someone from the left, considering Lecornu's assumption of the position a necessary step to maintain government stability amidst a sharp parliamentary division. The current political crisis raises concerns about the possibility of early legislative elections, while Macron did not seem ready to take this step, contenting himself with emphasizing the need for all parties to bear collective responsibility at this stage. This development comes after Macron offered to postpone the implementation of the controversial pension reform until after the 2027 presidential elections, which left-wing leaders considered insufficient. The head of the French Central Bank warned that the continuation of political unrest could negatively affect the country's economic growth.
