The Peruvian parliament ousted the country's president, Dina Boluarte, after an overwhelming majority of the deputies voted in favor of removing her on charges of "permanent moral incapacity," in a televised session where 118 deputies out of 122 voted in favor of the decision.
The dismissal came after Boluarte refused to appear before Congress, and right-wing and far-right parties abandoned their support, despite her previously surviving several impeachment attempts. Political crises are continuing in Peru, where six presidents have succeeded in less than nine years, amid ongoing popular protests and a growing influence of organized crime. Jose Giri, from the "Somos Peru" party, assumed the presidency temporarily until July 2026, announcing general elections in April of the same year, and vowing to confront the gangs that he described as the main enemy of the country.
